We are so excited to be working with the amazing SALLY ENGLAND for baby Harris’s nursery. She has a passion for art, craft, and style and is a true master in macrame. After seeing some of her work on the walls in the Ace Hotel, we had to get inside that brain of hers.
1. The standard, everybody wants to know but artists hate getting asked – What inspires you?
I take my inspiration from a lot of places, but I get really inspired and excited by fresh material combinations and the magic that is possible through color, texture and pattern.
2. Describe your aesthetic.
Aesthetically I’m inspired by the simplicity and calm of modernism, but at the same time I am drawn to the nostalgia and eclecticism of the 1960’s lifestyle. I believe in the power of connection between environment and self, and I kind of feel like my artistic aesthetic also carries through to my personal style and to the way I choose decorate.
3. If we traveled to your hometown, what would be the first thing we had to do?
I’m currently living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. First I would show you around my home and studio and show you all of my stuff. I live with my boyfriend Nick and my cat Sweet Georgia Brown in a cool old Victorian house, and my studio is in two connected rooms on the second floor. Then I would take you on a short drive to one of my favorite Lake Michigan beaches. It’s just so gorgeous and one of the main reasons I choose to live here.
4. What motivates you?
I am motivated by other creatives. I love to see people who work hard at their craft or business, and are doing what they love and are passionate about.
5. What was your last online purchase?
I just bought a pair of Teva sandals off eBay. They have the straps with the nifty purple Navajo design. I needed some comfortable shoes to wear around the studio since I’m on my feet a lot.
6. What is the best advice for beginning designers/artist?
Don’t quit your daydream.
7. What was your best flea market find?
I love flea markets and thrifting. My happy place is when I feel like Im on the verge of finding a treasure. There have been many great finds, but I think my favorite find are these two beautifully crafted Hopi Kachina dolls. They are carved out of wood and have little clothes a and real fur and represent the spirit of the Buffalo and the Owl. The Owl doll has a removable mask!
8. If we opened your fridge we would find ____________.
Lots of local produce. Michigan is only second to California in agricultural diversity, so we take full advantage of our state’s bounty.
9. What does your best day consist of?
Sleeping in, walking to brunch, hanging at the beach and making macramé with found drift wood, hitting up a flea market or antique store on the way home, then wine, dinner, and playing music with friends al fresco.
10. If you could teleport yourself anywhere this second, where would you go?
Hmm my back kind of hurts from leaning over my laptop, so I think I would transport myself to a natural hot spring in the middle of the forest somewhere, either that, or I would go to Joni Mitchell’s house.
